How long will you be on that trip?
For large work like this I would usually recommend a PDA + GPS, simply
because it is easier to manage and backup data. However, none of the
current PDAs works with standard batteries. You may use standard
batteries to recharge a PDA, though.
There are professional GIS PDAs, like Trimble GeoXT, but they cost a
couple of thousand dollars.
With a conventional GPS, the naming options for individual waypoints are
just too limited. Also, a typical handheld GPSR will be more reliable
than a PDA or notebook - but I have seen a few Garmins giving up under
less stringent conditions and loosing all data, so you absolutely need a
backup option to SD or CF card.
Maybe a Handheld + PDA combination is the way to go - you can use them
individually, use the PDA for backup and managing the data. That way it
will only be needed for short durations and battery consumption may not
be a problem.
