Actually the question should be "Why are MOST laptops no
longer made with serial ports?"
I have a 6 month old Compaq Presario 2190 laptop 2.4 Ghz,
768 Megs RAM, etc. and among the connections on the back is
a ***** Serial Port *******.
In fact that is the reason I bought it. I have a Garmin
176C and the cable which feeds NMEA data to the
laptop/SA2004 has a serial connector.
I am not in the habit of canning a GPS just because it is a
year or two old. My last GPS was a 6 year old GM100. (I
still have in with a fresh set of batteries in my Safety
Boat bag.) As my 176C is only 18 months old, I expect to
use it and my new laptop together for a number of years.
As far as the 64 meg data card for the 176C, my USB card
reader works just fine and in just a couple of minutes.
Next upgrade is a 128meg card. :)
