I have set up for mounting my Garmin eTrex Legend (all eTrex models
have the same patch antenna) in a pouch mounted on the shoulder strap
of my pack, on top of the shoulder. It is reasonably horizontal, and
gets a reasonable view of the sky, excepting my head.
Putting it on my head would be the best view of the sky, but A) I am
not seeking to be the alpha ubergeek, and B) the shoulder mounting
works well enough.
If you are not leaving the unit on continually, but pulling it out for
a quick check from time to time, the belt mount may be fine.
Happy trails,
