Andreas,
I assume you're talking about Assisted GPS, whereby the GPS device receives
ephemeris information on the GPS satellites via a ground-based wireless
network (cellular), which speeds up the initial position fix. It is amazing
how well this works. A friend of mine got a new Nextel i730 and I raced him
with one of my trusty Garmins to see who could lock-on the fastest. Using
this very unscientific method, every time it took the Garmin at least twice
as long to lock on. The Nextel reported the correct position in just a few
seconds after power up.
