It has varied, but has generally included time limits to take advantage
of any upgrade discount.
You didn't specify which MapSource product you have. The three that
were available when the eMap came out (late '99 or early '00) were:
Roads & Recreation - this has never been updated since then and likely
never will be
US Topo - this has also not been updated since then
MetroGuide-USA - this one has been updated regularly; the version in '99
was release 3 and recently release 6 was announced.
When MetroGuide-USA release 4.01 came out there was a discount offered
to owners of the release 3 version (I believe it was free if you bought
the previous version recently or $49 otherwise), but that expired a
long time ago.
