A good solution, but if you read the OP very carefully, you will note
that the problem is with the socket in the back of the GPS unit, not
the connector (although that is what actually broke).
There are sources for replacement connectors for the cable side.
You must be rather skilled, that solution of yours is far easier said
than done. And not everyone has access to a microlathe.
