I'm sure there will be lots of opinions here. I've had a Vista for several
years and have been quite impressed with it. My wife uses the basic yellow
eTrex for geocaching while I use the Vista. They both work well, accepting the
fact that their RF front ends are not as sensitive as other models. I
particularly like the basemap in the Vista because even without loading a more
detailed map I can usually use it to figure out what roads to take to get to a
suitable parking place. The Vista also has a vastly improved user interface
compared to the basic yellow model. I can enter geocaching waypoints three
times faster using the click-stick than she can with the up-down keys. Yes, I
know that some people hate the click-stick, but perhaps being left-handed (the
last minority group in the USA not the beneficiaries of government protection)
helps.

I can't argue with this. There are many times when I hardly can tell the
tracklog even exists on the display, especially with topo maps loaded. Perhaps
the Vista C is a real improvement here.

The basic yellow eTrex is a great choice for the entry-level user. I recommend
it strongly in the GPS classes I teach. But I haven't found the Vista to be
quite the dog that you imply.
