Where is that engine?
Try doing a raster-to-vector conversion on a 100k topo map of a
semi-mountainous area -- replete with the contour labels, streams, place
names, terrain markings, and so forth. If you ever get to the point of
separating the contours out from this mess, you will have to assign the
contours correct heights, somewhere; and then you will have to limit the
number of segments defining each contour, so the file isn't absolutely huge.
I would guess that this process still takes a lot of human intervention.
