Dunno how much you've messed with it, but in my experience, generaly it will
do as you ask... after a delay of a few seconds to half a minute, it will
decide to navigate you to the next waypoint...
But sometimes mine has gotten "wierd" and been insistant on going the wrong
way on the route, or something like what you describe... But it was the
exception rather than the norm for me. I'm quite positive that it was not
operator error on most of the times it was wierd... and stopping navigation,
then restarting it would set it straight.
