By gps76, I assume you mean gpsMAP 76? The gpsmap 76 would be a fine unit
to use for this purpose. You can use either the BlueCharts or Mapsource
(for land, roads) and all are excellent. My GPSMAP has eight megabytes
which gets a pretty decent urbanized region when using mapsource. While I
find this unit MORE than adequte for road navigation IT DOES NOT AUTO-ROUTE.
This may be of importance to some. Ie, it isn't going to tell you HOW to
get to a location with turn directions etc. All it does is show you the map
(street detail is great) and tells you what the next upcoming street is.
For me, it rocks the house. As a baisc marine unit, I think you'll be
happy.
I was into gps in the old(er) days and owned a garmin gpsII. No maps, just
a breadcrumb trail with your waypoints (if entered) around you in empty
space. We used to sail with and it was considered the greatest thing since
sliced bread. We used it for the very things you indicate- deviation from
course etc. Now I use the 76 map for hardcore sea kayaking and have never
been more happy.
