Looking for some direction (sorry for the pun)

I have a handheld GPS (etrex legend) and have some tracks/waypoints
that I would like to combine with elevation data. I got SDTS data
but I'm lost ('nother pun, sorry) as to getting the two sets of data
together to display track/elevation data together. I am running gnu/linux
and would like to have something free (as in speech) so I can hack at it
if I want to. Free (as in beer) would be welcome but it's not required.

I have played a little with GPSman and have viewed my tracks/waypoints but
I don't know how to combine the elevation data with that data.

I have looked over a lot of web pages and have compiled several different
packages that can do similar but different things with the data.

gpsbabel, gpstrans, and others.

Maybe it's a combination of several packages?

The whole GIS/GPS/geospatial data/all the standards/all the acronyms
really make my head spin. I feel a bit overwhelmed by all the stuff
that is available and so I was looking here to try and head up the
correct path (yet another pun) instead of wandering rudderless
into the sea of information that's available on this topic.
