The proper way to use a GPS on a hike, of any length, is to verify position when
out of tree cover / masking, compute a new mag heading and then shut it off.

Even 1 hour worth of batteries will get you through a two day hike this way.

And map reading is much more interesting, in any case.

If you have a volt/ampmeter and a resistor (5 or 10W) you can rig this up
yourself. In any case, one usually has good indications when batteries are
losing their ability to take a charge... and by avoiding 'fast' charges,
batteries will last a very long time.

I think the ultra runners up here who have compared said the NiMH don't result in same light quality from lights as lithium do, so I'm assuming would have shorter life in gps. ...
