Amen! I also recommend having an extra set of batteries in your
emergency kit. I like the 1.5 volt lithium AA cells because they're
light weight, have a very long shelf life (so they'll almost surely be
good when I need them), and work very well at cold temperatures. But
ordinary alkaline primary cells are good for at least several years in
storage unless they've been stored at a high temperature.

That is, of course, in addition to the map, compass, and watch -- and
knowing how to use them. We lose a lot of people in the woods here in
the Pacific Northwest who aren't prepared. Most do get found, eventually
-- sometimes alive, sometimes dead, sometimes just some scattered bones.
