When I bought my Garmin 75, I also bought PCX5 which at that time was
adequate. I quickly changed to using software on my Psion portable
computers as it was more capable as well as being portable and a
similar outline shape and size to the GPS-75.
The waypoint name length of 6 was consistent with all items.
I later bought an eMap and at first restricted my use to only 6
characters, but eventually changed to using it's maximum of 10
characters.
I'm now starting to use MapSource with my 2610 and keep finding
limitations.
MapSource has very limited input / output facilities. I had decided
to write a program to input the text output of MapSource and to store,
edit and merge the data. Then I would be able to output a file in
PCX5 format for an input to MapSource.
This would allow merging of data files (not possible in MapSource) and
better editing of data from both the 2610 and eMap, which still has
to be used for features not available in the 2610.
My version of PCX5 is 2.06 and I'm aware of up to version 2.09. My
Psion software that produces PCX5 format files, truncates waypoint
names to 6 characters for both 2.06 and 2.09 formats. MapSource is
also unable, using 2.06 and 2.09 data formats, to import data with
waypoint names longer than 6 characters.
This often results in duplicated waypoint names, that need to be
edited before input to MapSource and then re-edited back to the
original names when in MapSource.
MapSource allows at least 20 characters (I've not tested longer names)
although I don't need this length as I find 10 adequate.
Has anyone else experienced this type of problem and found a solution?
Is there a later version of PCX5 that allows longer waypoint names
that MapSource will accept?
Reg.
