ExpertGPS and USAPhotoMap make use of maps of the US downloaded on demand
from Terraserver, and will communicate with lots of different GPS. This is
for waypoint and route management. The maps themselves cannot be loaded to
the GPS.
ExpertGPS offers sets of waypoints for each state that probably contain the
locations of ghost towns. Give me the name of one, and I'll look.
I would recommend a Garmin eTrex.

Sometimes it's nice to have a mapping unit with a base map. It won't show
the detail of the area you are in, but it will orient you with nearby
towns. Remanufactured GPSMAP 76 ... $200.00
My daughter has an eMap, which is discontinued, but can sometimes be found
pretty cheaply. I see them on eBay from $50.
