Occam's razor would suggest a faulty switch, (or bad connection, or
circuitry problem). You can test the switch - when the unit is on, in a
dark place, see if pushing the switch puts the backlight on/off
immediately, or if you have to have several attempts at that too. If
that works then it's the circuitry that does the timing for 'two
seconds', as opposed to 'instantaneous' (circuitry which is obviously
always 'on', even when the unit is off).
Or, if it's under warranty, just let the dealer, or Garmin, sort it out
for you. Even if you ID the problem, you'll invalidate any warranty if
you try to fix it.
