Nothing to do with the Empire. The British National Grid was very
specifically designed to cover Britain's particular size and shape,
and wasn't used anywhare else.

What the British Empire did do with respecto to world wide navigation
was to fix zero longitude as passing through Greenwich, and refer
world time to it; hence the name, the Prime Meridian. It's nice to see
you ex-colonials still finding that useful :-)
