Alan,
I see your points. I was hoping that the controls would use no
power at all for most of the time, so all this does not matter
so much.
My project is essentially finished after writing it down (at
http://www.michna.com/sailbot.htm). I'm not going to build the
vessel alone. There is a tiny chance that somebody one day calls
me and asks me to take part in a similar project, and that's
about it.
But it was fun. Thanks for your excellent contributions!
