How many trees are there, and how far apart are they?

For a DIY solution, virtually any GPS with 12 parallel receivers and with a
computer interface would do - such as a Garmin GPS12. You can attach an
external antenna if required, but it should work ok on its own under modest
tree cover. You walk up to each tree with the GPS turned on, and create a
waypoint at the current location. Then you download all the waypoints into a
computer, use one of the many free utilities available to convert them into
a meaningful format, and import them into a database.

You can use the GPS to navigate you back to a particular tree. But if there
are more than 500 trees, you may not be able to hold them all in the GPS at
the same time.

As an alternative, have you considered commissioning an aerial photograph,
from which you can pinpoint each tree on a grid?
