I recently purchased a Garmin 60CS for around $380. (For detailed maps
expect another $150 or so).
I did quite a bit of research and chose this unit for:
-color screen
-barometric altimeter
-handheld size
-external antenna jack
-quad-helix internal antenna
I have used it for some geocaching and for autonavigation - the
autorouting for driving works very well. I also expect to use it for
track logging while snow skiing and inline skating, proabbly some basic
marine nav, hiking. Have been very happy so far. The lack of a memory
slot would be a downside if I used it for multi-state touring very
often.
There are several other units in this price range that should be
considered, but since this is a fairly geeky toy, there are many
complex options. Personally, if I wanted one of these, I would not
want <my> wife to pick it out herself (no offense to you, of course).
Check http://www.gpsinformation.net for lots of details. If it isn't a
surprise, make him do some research on his own. And check Ebay before
making your purchase.
