1) Yes, Garmin does have a maps product called WorldMap.
You can check the level of detail by having Java and Javascript
enabled for Netscape or Mozilla or at least Internet Explorer 5
with scripting enabled (and perhaps, ActiveX) and clicking on the
WorldMap MapSource Map Viewer on this web page:
<< http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/WM.jsp >> WorldMap
2) Garmin WorldMap is roughly equivalent in detail and accuracy to
the base maps for the various Garmin GPS models combined. In my
experience, looking at some regions with which I am familiar,
generally, WorldMap has been slightly better than the base maps.
Some of the regions that I have examined for this determination
have been around Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, USA; around
Cochrane and Fraserdale in Ontario, Canada; and central Moscow,
Russian Federation. Only quite major street and highways are
mapped and the accuracy is on the order of 200m. This is still
useful for orientation to one's position to a detailed paper map
for the locale (which is how I used them in the III+).
3) I can not speak about the StreetPilot III specifically; but, I
have tried WorldMap map segments in all of the following Garmin
GPS receivers with reasonable results (no auto-routing capacity in
the receivers that do auto-route, e.g.): III+, eMap, StreetPilot,
StreetPilot ColorMap and 2610.
4) A full load of the entire WorldMap onto a CompactFlash card for
use in a 26x0 can be done in a 512MB cartridge.
5) For my 2610, I am using a 2GB CompactFlash cartridge with all of
City Navigation North America 6 and all of the WorldMap segments
greater than 1KB in size (these all appear to be detail-less) not
completely overlapped by CNNA6. This fits on the cartridge.
The 2610 is willing to work with the entire set of maps.
a) The cartridge load on a 1.7GHz 3/4 GiB PC took about 12 hours.
b) Copying a backup of the Garmin map image set from the
CompactFlash card to disk took about 1/3 hour.
c) I have not yet tried restoring a back up to a CompactFlash
cartridge and testing whether that works in a 2610. That
is a project for another day.
d) I have noticed that the first time that the aforementioned
``entire world'' CompactFlash resident map set is used in a
2610, the receiver spends about a minute examining and counting
the map segments.
e) On subsequent uses, the receiver still counts the map segments;
but, the process does not seem to impact the satellite
acquisition nor take longer than even a warm start.
f) On the other hand, whereas searches for place names, e.g.
one I actually tried, London, in the CNNA6 completed in
seconds; I interrupted the search for London, England, UK
after about 30 seconds. But, the 2610 was quite able to
display the WorldMap mapping for the City of London,
such as it is.
6) As far as I know, detailed land mapping from Garmin is only
available for USA, Canada, Australia, (Western and Central)
Europe, the Middle East and South Africa.

7) If you are interested in water navigation, the BlueChart series
covers much of the ocean surface of the planet.
8) There is some map sets generated by Garmin distributors themselves
for Beligum, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany,
Hungray, Norway, Peru, Poland, Russia, Slovaka, South Africa,
Sweden, Ukraine and Venezuela.

9) A Google search for ``Garmin maps -site:garmin.com'' returns
about a million references, some of these are for map sets not
generated by Garmin or its distributors. I can not and will
not conjecture or state anything about their qualities.
