The 270MB download is just the initial pull. There's a tremendous
amount of stuff NASA, NOAA & USGS have available to WorldWind, and it
comes in at many levels of detail, depending on your 'altitude'.
So: WorldWind is an amazing thing, but you need an ongoing speedy net
connection for new areas you visit. Downloads are automatic,
file-by-file as needed, and are not purged (so they're there for next
time).
They've assembled large data collections ("Add-On Packs"), so you can
grab large chunks all at once - check their site.
