I actually find navigation along a saved track the most reliable method,
even when driving - and it works much better on the basic etrex than it
does on the more fancy mapping models. I use the map display oriented as
track ahead and find the upcoming turns of the displayed track extremely
easy to interpret on the ground almost all the time. It's not much use in
my Vista, though, since the update time is usually too long and track-ahead
is very unreliable, so you need to keep a shart eye on the orientation of
the "vessel" marker. Even worse it is often impossible to see the track
amongst the clutter of the Vista's mapping - I've even resorted to creating
and loading totally blank "maps" in an attempt to make the Vista behave
like my old basic etrex! In the end I asked myself "why?" and simply
stopped using the Vista!
