Both of you are missing the point. We're no longer talking about magic
garmin serial cables. We're talking about bog standard mini usb. Look
at the manual for the vista C for instance. It's the exact same mini
USB connector found on digicams et al.
My original question, was, is the power pin of that connector hooked up
in any way to provide power to the GPSr. According to answers given:
sometimes.
There's no debate about whether hooking a usb cable up to one of these
new devices will kill it. It's either going to work, or it's not going
to. We're NOT talking about using any of the magical USB-serial
dongles, which can be hacked to provide power, and MAY cause damage to
the GPSr. This was the case with the old style vista, for example,
with the traditional plug. (that would be this one..
http://www.pfranc.com/projects/g45contr/emap/index.htm ) if you don't
know what we're talking about. With those plugs, and some USB dongles,
frying was a possibility.
Any manufacturer that is using a BOG STANDARD, (see page 78 of the
vista C manual) mini usb connector, has two options. Connect the power
pin, or don't. Do you really think they're going to connect the pin,
and no ensure that the 5v isn't going to hurt anything?
Cheers,
Karl P
