I just spoke to Garmin Dealer Technical Support and they said the USB
cable they supplied with the units do not have power leads connected
and they should not be used to charge the GPS. They said if anything
happens to the GPS as the result of using other USB cables with power
leads, that action would void the warranty. We have not independently
verified the accuracy of technical support rep's statement, by hooking
up a volt meter to it.
