I agree with you that Garmin should go the effort of allowing us to Unlock
and then Lock for each unit... so that we can sell and upgrade, but still
not have to buy new maps after you go through two...

But in my experience the maps don't last that long before you want to
upgrade anyways... 2 to 3 years IMHO... So the problem is mute for me. I
can see that people who buy/upgrade more often than me would need more
unlock codes.

It's easy to blame Garmin for this sillyness, but Navtech has a certain
amount to do with it as well... And if everyone had moral fibre (and didn't
think it was ok to steal software/music), no one would need locks anyways...
(if wishes were fishes...) But what is the true value of this
functionality?... We are buying it, so I guess it's fairly high... Someone
will enter the market cheaper than Navtech if they truly overcharge.....

But again, I agree that Garmin seem to be going the route of "easiest to
manage" WRT the locks, and we the customer pay the price by being forced to
spend a lot more money than we otherwise would...

A while ago I commented on how I had the ability to make routes on my PC
with Metroguide, then download them to my Vista, with full routing
functionality in place... but they very cleverly made it so that the exact
same route, when downloaded to my 60C, imported as two points. The logic
being that I could live autoroute between the two points... the reality
being that I was forced to spend more money on Maps....
