For many niche topics there is simply a greater depth of information
available than on Usenet (I've been usenet since the only way to use it
was with linux commands, so I'm not exactly as noob). Some examples
that come to mind are the Toshiba PDA forums on Brighthand.com, the
Olympus digital SLR forum on dpreview.com,and the mapopolis forum on
gpspassion.com. I can find much more information (plus a knowledgeable
user base) that I can find on Usenet. On the other hand, if I want
information about building golf clubs, the usenet group is the best
resource.
The trick is to find the forums that are highly active.
