I think this is the crux of the problem. If people would just quote the part
they're responding to I don't think it really matters where the response is
at since it's easy to find the response at either the top or the bottom.

On the other hand, this blows the argument out of the water about wanting
the entire thread in a top down format in order to read the entire thread.
If I trim out the parts I'm not responding to then that goes against the
notion of having the entire thread available to read the entire conversation
in one post. So it's not so much a "top post"/"bottom post" argument but a
"trim it"/"leave it all" argument. The dilemma is, do I leave the entire
thread in case it's been a few days (or weeks) since you seen the post, or
do I trim it and only include the specific parts I'm replying to? I'm going
to trim it and assume you have the rest of the thread available in your
newsreader and can just go up and read it.

As I said before I really don't care where the response is posted and have
done both. But since enough people think this is an issue and will only take
you seriously if you bottom post I'm willing to conform if other people are
willing to trim their posts so I don't have to wear out my scroll wheel
getting past stuff I just read in the previous post.
