Google is good at finding things on the Internet, but there are many
things which are either on databases not searched, or not on the Net
at all.
The US PTO (Patent and Trademark Office) has a searchable database of
US patents.: <http://www.uspto.gov/patft/index.html>
Note that patents issues from 1976 and on are fully indexed and
searchable, ones from 1790 to 1976 are imaged, but a bit tougher to
search.
Bit of an art to using these, but if you have some key info like the
inventor and company, you can get to the patent number and the full
text.
There are 10 libraries around theUS which have a repository of patents
on computer and on microfilm.
You might also check into magazine archives for older technology
magazines, Scientific American, Popular Science, Popular Mechanics,
etc.
HTH,
Happy trails,
