The snowmobile does not have electric start, there is no battery. When the motor shuts down, electrical energy stops. That's when the internal batteries of the GPS automatically takes over. Stops are usually not too long in duration, only for fuel or food or to discuss the route with other group members. The internal AA batteries will keep the unit on when the engine is off. It senses external power, and will automatically switch to the external source when it is available.
For longer duration stops or between trips, I take the unit off the snowmobile so cold is not an issue in that case.
Why all the complications? Put 4 alkalines in the unit and plug it into your existing setup. I get 14 hours or so out of a set of batteries in my GPS-II+ and the II+ draws about the same. If you are going on multi-day trips, shut the thing off on meal or overnight stops.
