GPS where no maps are available

Hello,

I'm considering buying a GPS for the first time.

I'm wondering what is the best unit for the following
purpose: One person, with knowledge of the route to take,
drives it and records it. Then in the future, another can
replay the route and find the destination again.

This could be useful in a forest trek, but my main idea
is that I need it for city driving (non North-America or
Europe) where no map data is available at all.

It this possible? What units are best for this?
