Garmin eMap: Dead?

I have a Garmin eMap that sat unused for a couple of years. When I tried to
use it again, I powered it up and it came on but immediately complained
about low batteries and shut itself off. I replaced the batteries with
fresh and tried to power on the unit again but it wouldn't come back on.
Nothing. Nada. Ziltch.
I have left it sitting without batteries now for several weeks hoping to
come up with an extra $99 so I could send it in to Garmin for repair. In
the mean time, I started looking around on-line for any "home remedies" that
may be around.
So here I am...
Does anyone have any ideas on anything I might try?
Does the eMap have an internal battery that may have gone dead? I found
that some Garmins do have an internal battery but the story on the eMap
seems to be conflicting.
Can anyone provide instructions on opening the case without damaging it?
Thanks in advance,
Lance
