Note that the emap is orphaned and it didn't last all that long. Maybe there is a reason.
There is a reason but it is not poor design. The emap was orphaned from the very beginning. It is the last of a breed of Garmin products based on the Intel 8086 line of products which was summarily replaced with ARM based products from Garmin.
Dale,
isn't it a pity that they dropped the external design as well? I always found the eMap's outer appearance optimal, never to be achieved again by any other device.
I now have a Garmin GPSMAP 76C, but its design is far inferior. It is unnecessarily bulky, the screen is far too small in relation to the large case, and the keys are placed in a position suitable for octopusses, who have at least some of their arms above their eyes. (:-)

I think it is the external design that has caused the emap to live as long as it has. I still use mine occassionally. It was a great case design. In a car the key arrangement is great. I really don't mind keys above the screen when handheld but the emap was a nice portable optimized for vehicle use. If it had an SD card ....
