I usually buy the current version of hardware and/or software. As developers
update their products, they generally apply incremental improvements that
enhance functionality and reliability. Some of these improvements are subtle
rather than obvious. You feel that solid state memory is more reliable than
a hard drive? Millions of notebook computer users and Ipod devotees might
tend to disagree. And, I would not minimize the advantages of buying
something that is ready to operate, rather than ready to fiddle with and
upgrade before use. I have been building computers from scratch for years,
and have no aversion to 'working under the hood', but I nonetheless
appreciated the fact that the space of time between opening up my 2620
package and finding my destination without getting lost was approximately
two minutes. I did not need to do ANYTHING to the unit to get it to work.
That may not mean much to some folks, but I found it to be kind of cool :)
