etrex power lead failures

Just had my Garmin eTrex car power adapter fail for the second time in 3
months. Last time I opened it up and found that one end of the inductor
coil hadn't been soldered up and it had worked its way out of the pcb hole.
Soldered it in and all was well. This time it was obvious that the other
end of the coil wire had been cut too short and had just been tacked to the
board with solder rather than pushed through the hole to make a good firm
joint, so that joint had eventually failed as well. Managed to pull the
wire a bit tighter round the core and mount the coil at an angle to gain a
bit more length, so it shouldn't happen again. However the solder joint
joining the power input to the ground connector also failed when I
re-assembled the plug, so I'm wondering just how many other dry joints are
waiting to give up the ghost! It would have been a bit of a bugger for
anyone who wasn't handy with a soldering iron. Quality control?
(Apologies for posting this earlier in the middle of another thread - must
be losing my mind!)
