Re: Min spec for GPS?

Hi guys,
Is there a minimum spec needed on a computer (of any type) to run a GPS
system?

The general requirements are a means of getting the GPS data into the system and having a system that meets the requirements (memory, processor and speed, etc.) for the software.

I don't just mean like a glorified Autoroute where you plan your route
in advance. I mean with the satellite receiver gizmo so your progress
is tracked on screen and maybe voice directions as well.

That sounds like Maptech's Outdoor Navigator or Ozi Explorer CE or one of those packages. Those have trial versions, you can test them for free (with some diminished capability).

Outdoor Navigator gives up a little in the area of capabilities but is an incredible bargain in that it comes with free and unlimited downloads of topo and marine charting.

I ask because I just bought a CF GPS on ebay that I plan to use with my
main laptop which is certainly good enough but I also have one of
these.........

.....and I wondered if that would be good enough to run a mapping
solution such as Tom-Tom 3.

If you put the CF GPS in a CF to PCMCIA adapter I think it will be seen as a COM port (with NMEA data on it from the GPS) and your navigation application can use that.

Any clues appreciated 'cos it would be a lot easier using that than a
full size laptop in the car and I can't just test it myself because the
CF card and the tablet PC thing are still "in the post", lol.

Let us know how this works when you get your new toys. I've been interested in tablet PC's as the next logical step up from a PDA to get a bigger display. If you want to use it in daylight and outdoors, screen brightness and waterproofing will be your next concerns.
