Guess I never gave a lot of thought to the fact that while GPS receiver
connects to the computer via USB, it shows up as being connected to COM
4 in the Device Manager.

Not necessarily COM4 though. The system looks at the IRQs and memory addresses in use and picks a COM port with no conflicts. Its hard to predict what it will be.

I have a newer motherboard with no serial or parallel ports. A while back I was trying to upgrade the software on a Magellan Meridian and the magup.exe utility could not find the GPS. Then I noticed that it only checks COM1 through COM4 and that my serial to USB adapter had wound up as COM5.

I was stumped on how to get around the problem for a while. I couldn't find a way to change the port settings on the serial adapter.

Then I went to the advanced port settings on my USB modem and found it was on COM3. I was able to change that to COM6 or COM7. That freed up COM3 and when I unplugged the serial to USB adapter and plugged it back in again, it came up on COM3 and away we went.

I realize I could have just unplugged the modem for a while but I wanted to see if I could get it all working.

I can remember when it seemed difficult to deconflict memory addresses and IRQ's on a system with anything more than a modem and a sound card. And now Windows can figure it all out for itself. Finally.
