Just speculation on my part, but its possible that the maps might be
upgradeable "en bloc" in the same way that firmware is upgradeable.
I'm not talking about MapSource map updates, but rather a CD that
contains a new mapset and a downloader application. I find it hard to
believe that Garmin would expect you to ditch the units if, say, you
wanted to upgrade your maps every year.

They made the same mistake with the 26xx series, and probably the 27xx
series as well. Surely it wouldn't be too hard to save tracklogs into
the spare memory.
