Here are some more details on what is posted on their website, and what
isn't. Yes, I have permission to post this, we've been discussing it in the
DeLorme forums for a few days now. This is from a word doc I did with
bullets that I had to get rid of to post here, so hopefully it will look ok
when it's posted.
IMHO, this is the best feature upgrade they have ever done. That could be
because it includes many things I've been pushing for the last many
years;>)
As for the data, I know that was their main focus this year, so hopefully
your area will be updated. All I can discuss is the features, those I know.
Dan
These are the features listed in the first write-up for SA2006 on their
website... My comments are listed under the above feature (-)
- More than 268,000 new streets and roads
- Updated, expanded highway exit services and other GPS-accurate places of
interest
- MapShare-post maps and routes online with a unique URL, for family,
friends, clients
- EZ-Nav Toolbar-find all your most used routing, GPS, user control and
MapShare functions in one location
- Address Book-import, locate and route to and from your contact manager
listings
This is a really is really powerful addition. When you do quick searches, it
get priority. This means that whatever you name the entry can be found
really quickly. I've always had a draw layer that I keep my most often used
waypoints. I uses simple names, like LP for Lawyer's Pad, stuff like that.
This means that I still had to enter LP,city,ST in order to find it. With
the address book feature, I just enter LP and bingo, the map is positioned
there no matter where it was. My draw layer for waypoints, now has a very
short life as soon as I get time to convert everything.
- Avoid routing tool-easily block out areas you'd prefer to bypass
What makes it powerful is that it can be in any shape you want, you just use
the draw tools, make a shape, then rt mouse click and select Avoid.
- User-definable shortcut keys-ideal for GPS in-vehicle usage
You can totally control, and set any key to any one of 62 commands (with the
F1=Help exception). It comes with a couple of default schemes which you can
change, or modify and create your own from, then just select the one you
want when you need it. Personally, for driving shortcuts, I only want the F
keys. I've changed a few, but the toggles are especially powerful,
especially the ability to turn on/off the Auto Back on Track, and GPS Auto
Rotate, are huge to me. Another goodie they added (I know I requested it) is
the Drop Waypoint. We've had this on the Handheld apps for years, and it's
really powerful. You don't have to do anything, but hit a key (like when you
first get hit by the cop's radar gun;>) and it will leave a waypoint. You
can name it later, but it's there. This is powerful stuff!
- And much more.
(These are my personal favorites of the "much more")
- Auto Zoom In to Turns and Zoom Out after Turn (user controlled zoom out
limit)
This is HUGE! This is much more valuable than it first appears. With the
auto zooming, turns are a piece of cake, because the feature keeps the
upcoming turn pretty well centered as it zooms in, in increments. This is
much more valuable that I though it would be. Another thing it does is keeps
the GPS from going all the way to the top of the screen before it refreshes.
- Adjustable Advanced Turn Announcements that you control
You can now control how far in advance your turn announcements are. It's on
the Route/Advanced/Route Prefs screen. Just enter the seconds you want.
- Rest Areas and Exits added to the default Radar Search list
- Elimination of Yellow Background color on printed maps
- GPS Drop Waypoint Shortcut Key Option
Another slick feature IMHO. Often when your driving, you want to make a
waypoint of something, but don't have time to stop and deal with it. We've
had this on the Handheld apps for years, and it's really powerful. You don't
have to do anything, but hit an F keyboard shortcut key (like when you first
get hit by the cop's radar gun;>) and it will leave a waypoint. You can name
it later, but it's there. When you stop, you can check the GPS log and see
if you actually were going as fast as he said you were, and decide if you
want to argue it;>)
- Display GPS Trails without having to play it back, so you can examine the
waypoints it left.
Another long requested feature!
- Complete info on GPS Log Details, with times, averages, max, min, distance
and much more.
