I believe that it might be different to some degree in higher education. Many students refer to the profs as Dr.

I work at a company where the vast majority of the engineers have MS or PhD degrees, and I don't think I've *ever* seen anyone use the ", PhD" internally, and have never heard a PhD someone called "Dr." in-house except sarcastically (with the exception of the one PhD engineer who is also an MD). Most PhDs I know don't care about titles unless they are doing a resume or a formal document. Similarly with the few PEs we have here, the "PE" only ever comes out if they are formally signing something as a PE.
