My computer doesn't recognize my Garmin NMEA output.

I want to use my Garmin with my laptop to log my position. My Garmin
works fine with my home computer, but not with my laptop (without a
built-in serial port).
My laptop doesn't have a serial port. My PC store told me to get a
serial/PCMCIA card, so I bought one ($105). But the laptop still does
not see the NMEA output. So I brought it all back to the PC store.
They tried my Garmin on 8 computers. Three of them had a serial port
on the motherboard (and they read the Garmin data). Five of them did
not have a serial port on the motherboard and so they used a PCMCIA
serial interface, but the interface failed to recognize the Garmin.
The PC store came to the conclusion that the Garmin only works if the
serial port is on the motherboard. I've searched the INTERNET and
found nothing on the subject. They refuse to refund my money because
they say the problem is in the Garmin V (and also my Garmin 182). I
say the Garmin has no way of knowing what kind of serial port it's
hooked to.
I've primarily used hyperterminal (4800 baud, no parity, 1 stop bit, no
handshake) on
.
