I think the problem *must* be due to obstacles. However, the reality
is that I can drive with my GPS PDA in the car holder for an hour (yes
1 hour) on an open motorway, with it not locking on, and then I stop
and it has a lock in under a minute. Same with a train.

Well it's not only ephemeris, but of course also initial aquisition. A GPS in a car or train is not just a moving antenna in a freefield.
