placement of GPS

I am lucky enough to have a built in "Toyota" system, but this last evening
in a queue on the M1, I noticed some drivers with their GPS units bang in
the middle of their windscreens.

Bearing in mind it is an MOT failure to have a small stone chip in the field
of view, is this placement of said unit recommended as safe in the
installation guides.

I suppose if they have an accident due to failure to notice something in the
blind spot it caused they will at least know where they are, just check the
unit in their foreheads...
