I had problems with an Etrex Vista's click stick and display, where
the click stick wouldn't work reliably and vertical lines appeared
on the display. I found holding the Vista in one hand and whacking
it firmly into the palm of my other hand would often make the problems
go away for a while. This strongly suggested a loose connection of
some sort.
For instructions on how to disassemble an Etrex, check out the
PDF file available at

I disconnected the ribbon cable that connects the click stick
and display to the rest of the unit and just reconnected it.
I haven't had a problem with the click stick or display since.

The only problem with taking an Etrex apart is the sticky double-sided
tape that holds the rubber coating to the sides of the case. If you're
careful, you can remove it without getting too much sticky stuff all
over the place, and keep it in good enough condition to put back when
you reassemble the unit. I was able to do this, and the rubber hasn't
come loose from the unit yet.
Past postings to this group have said that you can get replacement
pre-cut double-sided tape from Garmin if you ask, but I didn't try
that.
