Question about which hardware to use:

We are not GIS professionals; we are geologist mapping large oil & gas
fields for a country in the eastern hemisphere.
What hardware, with the requisit software, should be used to gather
locations with differential GPS? We understand that something like a
Sportrack provides GPS with +/- 10 to 15 meters accuracy. If we correct the
GPS reading with a reference receiver, we get +/- 1 or 2 meters, which is
what we want.
There is a reference receiver near enough that we may use.
What hardware & software should we buy that is:
1. cheap,
2. can be used in a reasonable manner in the field,
3. provides the accuracy we need - 1 meter or less?
