Two car fanatics, colleagues have little faith in car sat nav.

One says he has heard stories, including on Top Gear, that the sat nav says
"turn right" and the road is one-way and, therefore, not possible to turn
into. In other words the sat nav data is defective or out of date.

I've seen this with Tomtom where the TeleAtlas maps are out-of-date and have no knowledge of one way systems that were put in years ago.

A Sat Nav system is only as good as the database which seem to be at least a couple of years out-of-date.

The other colleague, (who is, frankly, a wanker) says that he has heard that the sat nav gives turning directions after the vehicle has passed the road junction. In other words, there is a delay in giving the instructions.

Tomtom does the opposite and the voice instructions tell you to take the next left but the map shows that the third left is the route.

In general, the position shown on the map is within a few tens of yards from where you are. Voice instructions usually give you a few hundreds yards of warning before a turn. Visual instructions may tell you that there is 20 miles to the next turn or motorway exit etc.

Even if you miss a turn the better Sat Nav systems immediately recalculate a new route.

Are these two points' fact or fiction? How do you rate these types of sat nav?

They are fact - but its not as bad as it sounds. Despite being buggy software my TT always gets me to the destination.
