I find the 24K Topo (West) set very useful for my hiking needs. But YMMV, depending on the part of the country and where you hike.

So true. I looked at 24K Topo when I bought my 76CS, and found it to be entirely useless for my purposes -- backpacking in wilderness areas in Oregon and Washington. But I've found the standard Topo product to be extremely useful despite its limited resolution, especially in conjunction with the more detailed paper maps I always carry. But I'd love to have 24K GPS maps for the areas where I hike -- hopefully they'll be available some day.

I agree with all of that, Roy. I've use the Topo US product for a long time and find it much more useful than I expected -- given the 100,000:1 or so equivalent paper map scale. Just having the peaks and major trails is a big help. Contours are more useful with my altimeter set for metric, though.

In California we have a fair number of NPs -- making for quite a bit of 24K Topo coverage. They even have the relatively new Joshua Tree NP (which we use for land navigation training) and the San Bernardino NF (not an NP) -- plus the Mojave National Preserve (another favorite desert haunt of mine). Sure would be nice to have 24K type maps available for my 60C for all of every state, though.

I looked at 24K coverage for OR and WA (grew up in that area -- W7UOX in Portland in 1953, now W7OX) and I was also disappointed with the coverage. I like the Cascades and the coverage is just not very substantial (I don't hike much in Crater Lake NP!).
