In CA the hybird battery is guaranteed for 150K miles or 8 years. This is not your average battery. I have a 2004 Prius and no problems so far. I have 40K miles in 1 1/2 years. I am not sure about the Ford but, on the Prius, individual cells are replaceable so you don't need to replace the full battery at once.

Well that's good to know - maybe I'll put the Lexus hybrid SUV back on the list for when the Range Rover dies. I've seen a lot of folks bitten by the 'free' Fork Lift truck that needs $5k of new batteries, and the various fiascos with Li-Ion cells (Ipods, to name but one), so I was a tad nervous about hybrid cars (to say nothing of having 600+ Volts running around loose).

The Prius uses a 206 V battery and the lines from this run in a channel from the battery to the engine compartment. Once in the engine compartment it is boosted to 500 V and then fed to the motor that is only a foot or two from the Inverter/500 V power source and still in the engine compartment. There is no +600 volts running around loose. The battery is in the back of the car so there is 206 Volts available but there are relays that enable the routing of this current and they are kicked off by a 12 V car battery that is also in the back of the car. It is reasonably safe I believe. Toyota also has trained emergency rescue people all over the country on how to break into a Prius to rescue someone. They even have a special manual available on their web site about this.

I am not sure how the Ford is wire but the battery is a bit larger, but less than 400 V.

I was watching the first episode of season 11 of Top Gear last night, they drove a Prius at speed around their test track followed by an Audi R8, 1.5litre engine in the Prius compared to the big v8 in the Audi, all the audi had to do is keep up and match the speed of the Prius, after the test the mileage was 17.something mile per gallon for the Prius, 19.? ...
