This error pops up when MapSource can't find files that it needs, or
when the files it's looking for don't match what it's expecting. As
the registry is what MapSource uses to know what to look for, all
of these errors lead to a "registry problem" message. This is their
"catch-all" error message, similar to the dreaded GPF of the Win95
days.
Things to look for:
1. one or more TDB files is corrupt
2. some detail map files are missing or in the wrong directory
3. the overview img files are missing
4. a directory that it used to rely on no longer exists
This can be a PITA to track down becauase MapSource unhelpfully
doesn't report the specific problem it encountered.
Easiest solution? Uninstall all the map products and MapSource.
This basically nukes your MS env and you start your reinstalls
from scratch.
Better solution? Back up your HKLM/Software/Garmin/MapSource registry
key and start removing product and family keys until MapSource runs
again. Reinstall the offending product. This requires some registry
hacking and basic understanding of what the heck you're doing.
Most elegant solution? Once you identify the product/map family that
is breaking MapSource, figure out why it's broken and fix it. Requires
the above and a really good understanding of TDB files, MapSource
installation and other gory details.
