Are PDA sat navs robust?

Hi,

I am about to upgrade from my old Garmin GPS12 and am torn between
something like a Garmin 76CMap or Garmin Quest and using one of the newer
PDA's with an add on (maybe bluetooth) GPS mouse and software.

My main worry is how robust are the PDA alternatives ? It would seem they
offer lots of 'fun' in choosing and running different software etc but do
they stand up to outdoor hiking use and being placed in pockets. My old
unit has never let me down and you can even sit on it by mistake with no
harm to the unit.

No I don't use a PDA (windows CE or Palm) so that is why I am asking for
others opinions.

Thanks,

Andy...

(Yes I will also trawl back through the news items searching for comments).
